Reception

In Reception PE is covered through the’ Manual Handling’ early goal. The goal states that pupils ‘will show good control and coordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.

All pupils in Reception engage in 1 hour of timetabled PE teaching and learning per week. They follow the PE hub’s scheme of work covering, Early Physical Literacy, Gymnastic and Dance skills. Pupils also have five sessions of bike-ability taught by external providers during the summer term. Bikeability is also rolled out to our feeder nurseries as an early transition activity and attended by reception staff.

Key Stage One

In Key Stage One, PE is covered through the Physical Education National Curriculum.  The curriculum states that ‘A high –quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physical demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’

In Key Stage One, the provision is increased to at least 2 hours per week. The pupils follow the PE hub scheme of work and in dance follow a scheme of work linked to their topic such as in year one their dance theme is linked to ‘The Great fire of London’  The pupils are taught by their class teachers, our sports specialist and also by external sports providers. All children are taught the key PE skills in the the schools PE progression of skills document.

At both break and lunchtimes our school sports specialist is on hand to engage the children in a wide range of activities. All of our lunchtime supervisors ensure pupils are active and have many activities they can play with the pupils, which encourages teamwork and some competition against themselves and others.

Research Links with Coventry University

As a school, we have worked closely with the university for the last six years. We have participated in many University led projects across all three year groups, including being only one of two United Kingdom schools involved in a project with the World Badminton Federation.

Afterschool Activities

We offer a varied range of sporting afterschool activities throughout the year provided by both teaching staff and external providers. These clubs include, tag rugby, football, archery, street dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, healthy lifestyles, athletics and indoor tabletop sports. After School clubs, encourage pupils to engage in physical activity away from the curriculum and can be accessed by all members of our school community. Regardless of skills and ability.

Friendship Crew

Our Year One children have the opportunity to apply to be members of our Year Two School ‘Friendship Crew.’ They have a morning’s opportunity each September to learn games, which they can teach others. They are also supported by the sports specialist to encourage other children’s participation. The friendship crew also complete a four-week training course with the PE subject leader looking at the school values, emotions and how to support other children.

Sports Day

Our annual sports day gives our pupils the opportunity to share with their families the skills they have learnt throughout the year. This event is also attended by our eternal sports providers, which gives parents an opportunity to put a face to a name.  The activities showcase their skills is a round robin format. This offers children the opportunity to compete against themselves and others.

External Sports Events

Our school is part of a local consortium of schools who work together to provide opportunities for our pupils to play alongside and against other schools throughout the year.
