Mathematics at Race Leys Infant school
At Race Leys Infant School we want our children to enjoy mathematical learning and understand its significance in everyday life .We want all of our children to develop confidence and understanding when using mathematics.
Foundation stage -We love the Number Blocks and have lots of fun with them as they help us to really get to know our numbers. We learn a lot about shape and measuring as well as patterns. We explore outside and look for maths everywhere.
We provide our children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shape, spaces and measures.
We aim to develop lively, enquiring minds encouraging pupils to become self-motivated and confident. We want our children to use mathematics as a means of communication through which they can analyse information and ideas.
We help our children to have an awareness of relationship and pattern, and how these can help in solving problems. We learn to work systematically using problem solving skills and strategies we have learnt.
We want our children to be able to explain their mathematical thinking and respond to questions. We want our children to make connections and links using:
Factual recall - what I know
Mental - what I can work out from what I know
Written - how I can write my thinking down
In years one and two children become increasingly confident with their mathematics by practising with increasingly complex problems. We want our children be able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to new problems they come across.
Our children have access to a range of resources to help with their mathematical thinking. We encourage learning using objects, pictures and drawings as well as writing their mathematics in a more formal way. We want them to understand the concrete before they move to the abstract.
